'Carbon' is not 'black' but graphite is. ... But if you are interested to know WHY diamond has larger band gap, but not graphite, then read on! Diamonds are formed when each carbon atoms forms a covalent bond with 4 other carbon atoms. This means that ALL of the electrons are fixed in place in the crystal lattice.
