Dear Diary,
This is my first day in this tropical rainforest. This rainforest is located in Australia, Queensland. I had finally arrived in the rainforest. Since it was my first day, I was very nervous. My first impression wasn’t particular good but all I saw was a very big layer of shrubs, tall trees covering the light and entire ground covered in leaves, twigs and some random berries that must have fallen to the ground from the shrub. In my rucksack I carried first aid kit, tent, knife, rope, map, compass, water bottle, extra socks, ground sheet, mosquito net, matches, torches, batteries, camera, sleeping back, blanket and tent pegs. After searching, I eventually found a good place to set up my tent. I started by placing the ground sheet, then built my tent and finally added the mosquito net over it. Now I was all set and ready to live in the rainforest for 7 days.
Making fire was particularly hard as most of the wood was wet and I needed dry wood to make a fire. So I searched nearby and found small little twigs and one or two bigger ones which were all helpful in setting up my fire. If my fire needed to last the whole night I needed no rain. Obviously in the rainforest rain is very common. After I finished setting up my fire, I continued to look for a blanket inside my rucksack to keep me warm if it were to rain. The weather is out of our control, we can’t do anything about it but surely we can be prepared for it. So I wrapped the blanket around me as it started to get dark.
Many thoughts were running through my head as I sat beside a burning fire. This is my first time travelling in a rainforest. My only reason to do so was to experience life in the wild and I love exploring which is what brought me here. However, rainforests can be dangerous especially with the fauna. There are many unknown creatures and wildlife living inside a rainforest and being with just a small first aid kit it can be risky. Any injuries I have to travel back somehow or find someone for help so best I stay careful and alert.
As the darkness had grown, with small lights from the stars that shone in the night sky peeping through the small holes that trees didn’t cover, my fears also grew. There were small noises in the forest yet there were unknown to me. I made my way into my tent and left the fire burning. I wasn’t at all hungry and even if I was I certainly ain’t going to go searching in this dense forest in the dark. Best I searched for food in the morning when it was more safe.
