We visited the Government Desalination plant located close to Shell Beach, yesterday. It is a gigantic plant with machinery that is mind-boggling in size as well as functions. Several huge pipes ran in and out of the plant.

The Chief Supervisor of the plant took us around and explained how it works.

Converting saline water to drinking water is achieved through the process of Desalination. The saline water is filtered to remove mineral contents and salt present in it, making the water drinkable. Saline water is usually sea water, which is available in plenty.

He also explained that Desalination plants are found mostly in developed countries facing water crisis.

While desalination of water may address the issue of water shortage, it has several limitations. Environmental pollution caused by desalination plants is a major cause for concern.
