Diary entry on 'Amphan cyclone.'

Explanation:

25th April 2021,

15:30 hours,

Dear diary,

Today, I was reading the newspaper and I read about 'Amphan cyclone' which is currently a strong tropical cyclone over the Bay of Bengal. It is a serious threat to eastern India as well as Bangladesh. It is the first tropical cyclone of the North Indian Ocean cyclone that badly destroyed lives and property last year. On May 13, an area of low pressure developed over the southeastern Gulf of Bengal and south-east of Andhra Pradesh, Vishakhapatnam. The cyclone and the heavy winds brought rain and caused severe coastal erosion in the Valiyathura suburb of Thiruvananthapuram, damaging roads and destroying homes, forcing families living in more than 100 homes to migrate from this place. In other districts like Kottayam district, especially in Vaikom taluk, the cyclone caused extensive damage to homes, temples and electric poles. The tiled roof of the Vaikom Mahadev temple was damaged by these winds. The destruction of 14 houses and partial damage of 313 houses resulted in the loss of lakhs.

People used the high school as a shelter. In Ramanathapuram district, at least 100 boats on the coast were damaged due to strong winds. Three houses collapsed at Bommayarpalayam in Villupuram district due to huge waves and breach of embankment in the sea. Around 35 acres of banana crops were destroyed around Gandharvakottai and Aranthangi.

And the wind speed was as high as 120 kilometres per hour, while in some places, the wind speed was recorded at 133 km per hour. West Bengal suffered estimated damage of up to Rs 1 lakh crore due to the storm of Amfan along with numerous lives. I just hope such cyclones don't occur in future as it not only damages the lives but makes people orphan, homeless, helpless, and distressed.

Rohan.
