Dear Diary The mere fact that trees exist confirms that they play a role in the complex cycles of Nature. That they exist in such numbers (especially before we humans started to clear them away en masse) shows how important they are.Members of their about 3 trillion strong family grow virtually everywhere on the land masses of Earth.

Nature carries no passengers. All participants in the big business of Nature play their roles, usually without expectations but just because it is their role. In fact, often their roles are sacrificial. So it also is with trees in their huge variety, perhaps around 50 thousand species. Each of these trees and species plays its specific collection of roles in one or more of the diverse environments where it has evolved in unison with the evolution of Nature.
