Dicky Dolma was born on 5th April 1974 in Palchan, a village, a few kilometres from the tourist resort town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh. ‘I once heaved a sack of grain half a kilometre uphill with a boy from the village. We took turns carrying it on our backs, and by the end he was reduced to tears, so I offered to do his share as well,’ recalls Dolma, who was also the national women's skiing champion for over a decade. Talking of her success story, Dolma says, "I first began playing in the village with home-made skis-shaved wooden planks with rough straps to slip on over the shoes. Then I won a scholarship for a skiing course but my family didn't like the idea of my missing school. It was only after one of the instructors at the Skiing and Mountaineering Institute in Manali wrote a letter to my parents that they agreed. And then there was no looking back. I did all the courses and began participating in competitions. The Manali Institute has played a major role in Dolma's life. After she completed the Institute's skiing courses, she did a basic mountaineering course in 1991.It was after this that the Institute forwarded her name for the PreEverest Women's Expedition, in which she took part from 1991 to 1993. From these two expeditions a final team was selected, and in 1993, she achieved the unique distinction of being the youngest woman to climb the Everest. A. Answer the following questions. 1. Dolma's parents didn't like her missing the school but when the Manali Institute wrote a letter to her parent, they agreed and supported her. The year 1993 was significant to her because she got a chance to prove her self.
