Darwin observed fintches, of the Galapagos Island. Galapagos island is a land mass, that got separated from the mainland along with a population of fintches. Now, back in the mainland, they had different feeding habits, but here, the fintches. devoloped different types of beaks, each for a particular type of food habit, and thus, survived and got naturally selected. Same happened in case of giraffe.
So, natural selection in the process, by which nature decides the survival of a particular species depending upon the adaptations it can undergo. This phenomenon of devoloping adaptive features to survive over other species, is called survival of the fittest.
