Answer:

There are definitely many alternatives to democracy other than dictatorship but they after much debates between political scientists have been found deficient to democracy and as they say Democracy is the worst form of the government(attributed to the complex and relatively long process for decision making due to checks and balances) but in the available forms it is the best.

Other alternatives could be Meritocracy,Communism.

But the people’s sovereignty or polpular sovereignty where its the people who decide the what when and how of the state and they through their representative(or through

plebiscite in a direct democracy)decide by what laws they should be governed by. So all in all its the people which form the essence of democracy whearas in meritocracy we may have the most able administrator to rule or the best law maker to make laws but they will not have political accountability towards its subjects. They may take the most able decisions but there will always be that risk of them turning out to be dictatorial or tyrannical as we know politics has strange masters and so does power which brings with it strange desires and then we won't have any means to get rid of them.

Talking about Communism..it is an idealistic phenomenon and far from reality so it cannot serve as an alternative.

The people who look for alternatives of democracy citing its checks and balances and diverse opinions forget that the biggest short comings which the alternatives have is the basic essence of democracy i.e. the people’s choice prevails.

Instead of looking for alternatives one should look into the prospects of improving the present structure of democracy (representative democracy) by using a combination of meritocracy and democracy which to an extent could provide an able and accountable government.
