From the story 'A Midnight Visitor', Fowler was always interested in detectives and their profession. When he met Ausable, at first he was not very much impressed. Ausable wanted to change Fowler's impression.
At first, Fowler thought that Ausable was quite boring. But when he started witnessing Ausable's intelligence in tackling a crime scene, he was very much thrilled and impressed. His opinion on Ausable completely changed and he was so excited again.
Fowler found the episode very thrilling. He was impressed by the way Ausable got rid of Max with his tactful nature by killing him without doing anything on his own. He told Max about a balcony just below his window and how he was expecting the police any time to protect his report.
When there was a knock on the door, Ausable told Max that it could be the police. Max immediately rushed to the window to jump to the balcony below. But, as there was no window, he met his end instantly.
