Mr. Herriot’s strict advice for Mrs. Pumphrey was to cut down on the sweet things and to give him plenty of exercises.

But Mrs. Pumphrey did not heed (pay attention) to this advice. She did not cut down on the sweet things. Because she thought that Tricki was weak. So she was giving him cream cakes and chocolates. Also, he loved cream cakes and chocolates so much that she couldn't control herself feeding him the sweets. Tricki had very little exercise too because the gardener was unwell.
