Nehru did not consider the Ganga a holy river. He wanted his Ashes immersed in the Ganga because he had been attached to it since his childhood.
Being a hindu and whatever I have always heard from my parents and forefathers I believe that ganga is a holy river and is also sacred to our religion. It is believed that bathing in ganga causes the remission of sins and facilitates moksha and the water of this river is also considered very pure.
