Given Owens' speed and jumping ability, giving up a foot still allowed him to easily post one of the best qualifying marks and advance without risking that fatal foul. He did so, jumping 7.64 meters to qualify, then jumped 8.06 meters twice in the final competition to win the gold medal and set an Olympic record.
