Han Xin had a suspicious act before Chu-Han contention even ended.

Han Xin

After Han Xin conquered the three Qins for Liu Bang, Liu Bang sent him with his best troops to subjugate other Chu vassal states in the North. He quickly conquered Zhao and Qi.

Simultaneously, Liu Bang, his lord, was encircled at Xingyang by the main Chu army led by Xiang Yu himself. He sent many messengers to Han Xin to come back for his help.

Han Xin obviously ignored all those messages, and enjoyed a pleasure in Qi palace as if he were a king, while his lord was in danger!

Liu Bang had to find the way out of Xingyang by Zhang Liang and Chen Ping’s plan. He even had to kick his two sons from his chariot to make it move faster to flee from Chu cavalry. He lost many of trusted soldiers along the way. Liu Bang then asked for Han Xin’s return again. Han Xin just replied that he wanted to be made a King of Qi.

This angered Liu Bang so much that he reprimanded Han Xin harshly in the court, and was about to refuse his request. However, Chen Ping and Zhang Liang intervened, and asked Han Xin to be crowned a King of Qi.

One source also mentioned that Liu Bang even went to Qi himself and saw Han Xin was drunk. He thus took the military tally from him. Han Xin had to implore Liu Bang to become a grand commander again.

Subsequently, Han Xin then brought the army back to Liu Bang, and defeat Xiang Yu at the Battle of Gaixia.

If you were Liu Bang, are you going to hate this guy?? I think most people will say YES.

Furthermore, after Chu was defeated, Han Xin hided Zhongli Mei, one of Chu generals in his house without informing Liu Bang.

Hiding an enemy general in a house was a suspicious act of treason. Han Xin clearly knew this, but he refused to do hand him to the Han government, despite being a general before.

Liu Bang finally knew this. Instead of executing Han Xin immediately, he demoted Han Xin to a Marquis. Finally, some sources said that he was accused of treason with Chen Xi by Empress Lu. He was later executed along with his entire family.

However, he may not be wrongly accused at all. One source noted that Chen Xi visited Han Xin before he left the capital. He asked Han Xin to give him an advice. Han Xin asked him to rebel, as without Han Xin, no one in the court can match Chen Xi. Chen Xi then asked Han Xin to rebel inside Chang’an. Han Xin agreed and planned to do so. This was known by Emperor Gaozu’s spy in Han Xin’s house. That spy rushed and told Empress Lu about this, so she asked Xiao He to lure Han Xin inside the palace to capture him.

Han Xin was finally executed. This is because of three reasons

Han Xin disobeyed his lord, allowing him to be in perilous situation, while Han Xin was enjoying his life in Qi.
Han Xin hided the enemy general in his house, which was an act of treason.
Han Xin possibly collaborated with the rebels to overthrow Han dynasty.
Are these enough for Han Xin to be executed?

The Chinese idiom 功高震主 (gong gao zhen zhu- which means achievement so great that even the master is overshadowed) is the remark made by later historians on the main cause of Han Xin death.
