The new style didn't entirely displace the existing art of producing books by hand.

Because in past, the print technology was expensive.  So writers could not afford it.  Handwritten books were still appreciable and had a craze among people.

Borders were illuminated by hand with foliage(leaf-like designs) and other patterns and illustrations were painted.  The metal letters imitated the ornamental handwritten styles.

Hope this will help you.
