Heya!

The question you have asked is basically regarding the sepoy mutiny or the revolution of 1857 ..
The first war of Indian independence

The rumours spread ..as mentioned in the question was that the greased cartridges that the British army provided the Indian troops..
We're greased with Cow and pig fat...

So actually,
Using cos fat is banned in Hinduism
And pig fat hurt the islamic religious sentiments because in Islam.. hurting animals is prohibited
Therefore.
The greased cartridges had to be bitten off before use..
This hurt the religious sentiments and beliefs of both the religions

So..
This was an immediate cause..of the revolution of the army..
And almost 25+ soldiers revolted against this
In Meerut..

Including MANGAL PANDEY

______

almost all people and historians believe that the greased cartridges weren't greased with cow or pig fat..

It was just a rumour..
Which many people believed and diverted towards it..

But still..
It did more good than bad..

______

However one more reason behind this revolution was that the British army also forced the Indian troops not to keep beards
And Katar etc
.
Which also triggered the Revolution

HOPE THIS HELPS YOU
