Yes the narrator lost his courage when he realised that his compass was not actually working. He gave up on his hopes and waited patiently to know what would happen next. He still wanted to go to England to meet his family and was ready to take up any risk for it. Suddenly he spotted a black aeroplane whose pilot was guiding him and showing him a way to go surprised by this he followed the guidance and to his amazement reached the airport safely. But to the conclusion he was informed that there was no such aeroplane travelling in that way and it might have been an illusion
