When the woman says that she usually likes the wrong kind of people she is actually giving herself away. No woman in possession of riches and wealth would keep the company of bad people. Moreover instead of allowing a stranger to break open the safe she would have attempted to get the password or would have gone without the jewels. A respectful woman would never want to let a thief get away but the lady in the story allowed Horace to get away.

Yes, I began to suspect, before the end of the story, that the lady was not the person Horace Danby took her to be.
I realised this at that point when she said " Before we left for London, I promised my husband to take my jewels to the bank ; but I left them here in the safe. I want to wear them to a party tonight, so I came down to get them , but........."
No, lady will ask the thief to get her the jewels from the safe. It wasn't possible that she could forget the numbers to open the safe. Also no lady will say that her won't be there for a month and she will have the safe mended by that time. It describes that all is pre-planned here.
