Answer:

Do you believe in magic?

Yes ( Warning of Sensitive content ahead)

In a Magic known as Medicine

A 16 Year Old male patient was brought to the emergency who has cut his right wrist with glass over a argument of 10 rupees with his mother.

I opened the cloth which was covering the laceration and it looked very bad. Almost all the muscles, nerves and blood vessels present in the forearm were cut with bleeding obstructing the view. A Emergency X-ray was done which thankfully showed no deformities in bone.

The Plastic Surgeons were called and they examined the wound and a emergency surgery to repair the laceration was planned.

The Patient was prepared in few minutes to put under Anesthesia but the problem was the major table in Emergency was already occupied by another patient who was undergoing a exploratory laparotomy. ( A surgery where abdomen is opened for search of pathology)

The Plastic Surgeons did not wanted to wait hence the surgery was planned under regional anesthesia on a side table.

A Marathon Surgery hence began which lasted 10 hours on a Sunday. The distal end of the cut end of the muscle were pulled to see for movements of finger and based on the movements of fingers, the muscles were identified with careful marking. The patient was conscious and talking and asking to save his hand during the surgery and occasionally shouting in pain when a nerve was touched.

Few Hours in Surgery but we were unable to find the Median Nerve. ( Main nerve supply to muscles of forearm and hand) and the surgeon thought that the nerve may be high up from laceration or got completely crushed from Injury. After half an hour we found a nerve cut in two pieces which we thought as Median Nerve but it turned out to be anterior interosseous nerve ( A branch of Median Nerve). Few more hours into surgery we found the Median nerve intact hiding inside between bellies of two muscle.

The Surgery was long, pushing the limit of knowledge of human anatomy as one needs to identify the structure correctly and attach the cut parts properly. For example if you attach the muscle which is moving the thumb with fingers you will mess up and that's something not acceptable.

After a Long Surgery, filled with confusion, difficulties the entire laceration was repaired and wound was closed.

A month later the slab was opened and the patient was able to move all his fingers correctly. All the muscles were attached correctly and seeing this the Patient’s father touched the feet of the main surgeon saying that he is no short of GOD who has gave his son a New life.

The Magic Done by Medical Science is way beyond any Magic giving people a new life and a opportunity to live again.

I believe in Magic of Medical science backed by Years of Research and Science performed by Doctors everyday to serve Mankind.

EDIT: The Surgery was done absolutely free. The only money they required to pay was to the ambulance. All surgeries are free of cost in WB Govt Hospital.

Hope it helps you!!!
