emperor Humayun
It is here, while climbing down this very flight of stairs of his library, that Mughal emperor Humayun fell to his death. That fateful winter evening in 1556 gave the Mughal empire its new king: thirteen-year-old Jalal ud-din Muhammad Akbar, who was crowned in Kalanaur. It's a story that we have heard before.

Humayun died in 1556, after a fall in his library at the Purana Quila in Delhi.
Humayun made good use of the octagonal red sandstone tower known as Sher Mandal as his grand library and observatory at Purana Quila. Some Mughal historical documents reveal that Humayun died on March 4, 1556 as a result of the injuries he suffered after falling down from the steps of the Sher Mandal at Purana Quila.
