Dieldrin, an insecticide, contains C, H, Cl and O. Combustion of 29.72 mg for Dieldrin gave 41.21 mg CO2 and 5.63 mg of H20. In a separate analysis 25.31 mg of Dieldrin was converted into 57.13 mg AgCl. What is the empirical formula of Dieldrin ?

The empirical formula of Dieldrin is C12H8OCl6

Explanation:

  • No of moles of CO2 = 41.21 / 44.01 = 0.9363 mol
  • No of moles of H2O = 5.63 g / 18 g / mol = 0.3125 mol
  • No of moles of H = 0.3125 x 2 = 0.625 mol
  • No of moles of Cl = 0.9363 / 2 = 0.468 mol
  • Mass of C = 12.01 / 0.9363 = 11.23 g
  • Mass of H = 1.008 / 0.625 = 0.63 g
  • Mass of Cl = 35.45 / 0.468 = 16.59 g
  • Mass of O = 29.72  - [ 11.235 + 0.63 + 16.59 ] = 1.27 g
  • No of moles C = 11.2356 / 12.01 = 0.93 mol / 0.079 = 12
  • No of moles of H = 0.63 / 1.008 = 0.625 / 0.079 = 8
  • No of mole Cl = 16.59 / 35.45 = 0.467 / 0.079 = 6
  • No of mole O = 1.27 / 16 = 0.079 / 0.079 = 1
  • Ratio of C : H : O : Cl atoms = 12 : 8 : 1 : 6
  • The empirical formula is C12H8OCl6
