just by seeing its physical properties. metals are ductile ,malleable, luster,whereasnonmetals are not. The maindifference between metal and non-metal is that metal give electron to another atom or compound while non metalaccept electron from other substances.this is because of their electronic configuration.

1) they r shiny and have lustre
2) electric current and heat can pass through them
non-metal
1 they r not shiny and don't have lustre
