Overlapping social differences can be harmful for the nation as it creates disunity. For Ex:- The difference b/w Blacks and Whites in America.
Cross Cutting social differences are however not that harmful, They're easier to accommodate. They do not create disunity. It is difficult to pit one group of people against the other in cross Cutting social differences. For Ex:- The difference b/w Protestants and Catholics in Netherlands cross cut each other.
