Union list contains 97 subjects whereas statelist contains 61 subjects.

The powers of union government are mentioned in union list.
In statelist subjects are mentioned on which state legislature will enact laws.

Union list contains subjects of national importance.The decisions related to these subjects can only be made by the union government.These subjects are included in the union list because we need a uniform method for these subjects throughout the nation.The list contains defence,communication etc

State list consist of subjects of state importance.The decisions related to these  to these subjects can only be took by state government.The list contains police etc
