A variable area meter measures the flow of fluid by permitting the cross-sectional area of the meter to change in accordance to the flow of the liquid. The pressure drop remains constant while the rate of flow is a function of the constriction area.

A variable head meter has a constant area of orifice or constriction. The pressure drop is dependent on the flow rate.

variable head meters

In which the area of constriction and orifice is constant and we can say that on the other hand in variable head meters. the drop in pressure is dependent on the rate of flow.

variable area meter

A variable area meter is a meter in which we measure the fluid flow by allowing the cross sectional area of device to vary in the response to the flow, due to the causing of some measurable effect that indicates the rate.
