(1) Equatorial Lows / Doldrums: - Because of continuous heating of the earth by insolation, pressures are low at equator and winds converge and rise near the equator. This region is called inter tropical convergent zone (ITCZ) and is also known as “doldrums”. It characterized as The location of this region is between 5º S and 5º N latitudes. Hot atmosphere region. These are the equatorial belts of calms and variable winds due to which this region is known as doldrums. Wind is light due to negligible pressure gradient. Mostly air mass movements are vertical in the region of atmosphere.
(2) Sub tropical high or Horse latitudes: These are high pressure belts formed in both hemispheres around 30oN and 30oS. Here upper air moving from the equatorial region converges and piles up. At the surface, the air diverges which forming westerlies in the poleward side and trade winds in the equator ward side.
(3) Sub polar low: These are low pressure belts formed in both hemispheres around 60oN and 60oS. Because of frictional force air mass near earth surface became warmer which cause low pressure in these regions. Here winds meet from both side and converge or rise up ward in atmosphere.
(4) Polar high: It is a higher pressure region near north and south poles where subsidence of air from higher levels. This forms polar easterlies, which meet with prevailing westerly near sub polar low regions. Polar fronts are developed because of great contrast between temperatures of both winds.
