rough endoplasmic reticulumn has ribosomes attached to its membrane.
since the ribosomes produce proteins, when attatched to the rough endoplamsic reticulumn it helps in protein synthesis and packaging.

whereas, the smooth endoplasmic reticlumn regulates calcium ions. it is called "Smooth" Endoplasmic reticulumn to differentiate it from the rugh endoplamsic reticulumn

Hope it helps :)

rogh endoplasmic reticulum when observed through microscope seems rough because it has ribosomes attached to its surface and when smooth endoplasmic reticulum is observed through microscope seems smooth RER make fats and lipids whereas SER make proteins. Endoplasmic reticulum is important for membrane biogenesis because it provides large surface area for biochemical activities of the cell
