Gond Art from India and Aboriginal Art from Australia
Gond Art from India
The Gond tribal community is one of the central India’s largest communities and their art is an expression of their everyday life. The fine lines, dots and dashes are used in the Gond Paintings. The Gond tribe believed “viewing a good image begets good luck”. This belief led the Gonds to decorate their houses and the floors with these traditions forms of painting. However, now the artists paint on canvases and other surfaces.
The fine lines, dots and dashes are drawn to distinguish different layers or surfaces while painting.
Aboriginal Art from Australia
Aboriginal art belongs to the Aboriginal tribe of Australia. Aboriginal art stands for written language. It basically has different layers to it. Aboriginal art requires permit. Not every Aboriginal artist can draw because if its not their story they couldn’t paint it. In the later period around 1970, dots were used to hide secret information, Dot painting in the main, began when the Aboriginal people became concerned that white man would be able to see and understand their sacred and private knowledge. The dots were used to hide the underneath painting.
So after reading and understanding both the art forms, I thought when there are so many similarities in both forms why not do a painting with some components from both arts. Both art forms use dots, and both belong to the indigenous people from different parts of the world. So I have incorporated dots to represent Aboriginal art form and a deer with patterns to represent Gond Art. I can not paint an authentic Aboriginal painting but I can incorporate the Dot in my painting.
