A saturated solution basically implies that all the solvent has been dissolved with the solute, such that if more solute is added, it would not dissolve; this is called a saturated solution.

An unsaturated solution basically means that if you add more solute, it can and will still dissolve in the solvent until it reaches saturation. Degree of saturation refers to the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at a certain temperature. If the solvent could dissolve more solute than is present, the solution is unsaturated. If the solvent has dissolved the maximum amount of solute possible (at that temperature), the solution is saturated.

Difference and similarities between saturated and unsaturated solution, are as follows -

Difference :

  • At a particular temperature, the saturated solution contains the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved into the solvent, whereas the unsaturated solution contains less than the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved into the solvent.

(We can also describe the previous point by saying, at a particular temperature we cannot dissolve any more amount of solute in a saturated solution whereas we can dissolve more amount of solute in an unsaturated solution.)

Similarity :

  • Both the saturated and unsaturated solution is made out of certain amount of solute and solvent.

Thus, the difference and similarity between saturated and unsaturated solution has been derived.
