The differences between Garam dal and Naram dal include:
- Garam Dal aimed at administrative reforms under British rule whereas Naram dal aimed at Swaraj i.e. self-rule.
- Garam Dal believed in peaceful means of constitutional agitation whereas Naram dal favored a radical approach.
- Garam Dal: Extremist leaders like WC Bannerjee, Surendra Nath Bannerjee, Gopal Krishna Gokhale among others. Naram Dal: Moderate leaders like Lala Lajpat Rai, Bipin Chandra Pal, and Bal Gangadhar Tilak among others.
The split in Congress in 1907 took place in Surat session was popularly known as Surat split, led to two factions: Garam dal, ie Extremists and Naram dal, ie Moderates.
