Subsequently, any profits or losses that the airline incurs is either absorbed by the government or the entity that runs it. The government or its governing entity and dictates what the prices are for its routes, and where it should fly. Examples of government-owned airlines are Aerolíneas Argentinas and Air India.

Private airlines, on the other hand, can be nationalized airlines that have been privatized - such as British Airways and Philippine Airlines, or started from the ground up as a private airline - such as American Airlines. Routes, fares, finances, and governance of private airlines are dictated by the airline and not the government.
