Science and mathematics are completely different, disjoint fields which happen to enjoy a harmonious dialogue, each profiting the other. Mathematics isthe study of rational systems and models- it is the process of assuming a certain set of axioms, and studying the necessary logical implications of those axioms. Modern science happens to rely heavily upon axiomatized models for describing natural phenemena- as such, it is often useful for scientists to know what the mathematics of those models are. However, the processof science is the process of selecting a model, of creating statements which aretaken to be true- this process might be augmented with observation of the mathematical consequences of the model, however it cannever be more than part of the toolkit to ascientist. To a mathematician, it cannot matter what things are taken to betrue- what matters is the relationship between those things. As such, the physical world is of no concern to the mathematician; much of mathematics was created with an eye toward creating or reasoning on physicalmodels, however the physical world can beno more than a source of motivation and analytical modelsfor a mathematician.
