Power alcohol or Ethanol as it is popularly known has a much higher octane value than petrol and therefore delivers superior efficiency. But it also requires high compression engines which car engines are not. They are designed for much less compression pressures, suitably matched to the lower octane of petrol.

Most petrol vehicles will run on any distilled spirit with no modifications. Ethanol, or alcohol made from grain being preferred. The spirit should have no, or as few as possible, dissolved impurities and no sediment.
