In order for current to flow and do useful work, there has to be a complete loop for the current to travel from the one terminal of the source (voltage or current) to the second terminal of the source. All sources have two terminals.

If you can imagine an oval racetrack in which the cars are free to circulate, that is a closed circuit.

If you imagine it having gates and bridges, if the gate was shut and or the bridge was out, then the cars could not complete the circuit. That would be the analogy of an open circuit, where one of the legs or wires was broken, or perhaps an intervening switch prevented the flow of electrons.

So in an open circuit, no current flows and no work is done. In a closed circuit, current can flow and work done on the circuit load.
