The main difference I see is AD role can be configured from Server Manager, that is being a domain controller is a feature in 2012. Whereas in 2008 it is done through dcpomo or a third party tool.
Remote Desktop Service is one another feature made so complex in 2012, which is more like a disadvantage but if you compare with 2008
