Find a common denominator between the two fractions. 8 is a multiple of 4 so we’ll use 8 as the common denominator. We need to change the fraction 3/4 so that we can use it in an equation with the fraction 5/8.

We multiply the top and bottom of 3/4 by 2.

3*2=6

4*2=8

The fraction is now 6/8, and we can use it with 5/8 to find the difference!

6/8 - 5/8 = 1/8
