A mixture of Iron and Sulphur is simply, a mixture. There is no change in the atoms of either, there is no reaction. Hover a magnet over this and you have successfully separated them into two elements.

However, the compound (called Iron Sulfide) is different. The atoms of Iron and Sulphur have suffered alteration and there are new molecules. A Combination reaction has occurred. Also, it is not possible to seperate them using physical means anymore.
