Acid is the substance when dissolved in water, increases the concentration of H+ ions. The base is the substance when dissolved in water, increase the concentration of OH- ions. Such species that accepts the pair of electrons (an electrophile) and will have vacant orbitals are known as Lewis acid.

Difference between acidic and basic substances are as follows :

ACIDIC SUBSTANCE :

When added o water, it releases H+ ions and when it is added to metal then there is a release of metallic salt and Hydrogen.

Acidic substance are sour in taste.

Turns blue litmus to red.

BASIC SUBSTANCES:

When added to water it produces H- ions.

Basic substances are bitter in taste

Turns Red litmus Blue.
