During fertilization in birds, the embryo undergoes a separation only in the cytoplasm calleddiscoidal meroblastic cleavage, which results in a blastocyst being formed. The blastoderm cells that have not shed their deep cells constitute the Area pellucida and the opaque part of the embryo that surrounds this area is called the Area opaca.

The major difference between the two layers is the shedding of deep cells.

While the deep cells of area pellucida have been shed, the area opaca ends up retain the deep cells.
