Biotechnology is not about biology , it also encircles chemistry , physics , maths and information technology . Moreover it's an amalgation of technology with above streams through which we exploit microorganisms for the betterment of homo sapiens .
Since B. Tech is a 4 year course which is equivalent to engg. , It provides more hands on experience , with their respective domains and specialisation . Major institutions like IIT's , MIT , SRM , VIT , AMITY , LPU and many more provide b.tech options . This course will provide more practical knowledge through compulsory internship which starts after 4 semester. Apart from pharmaceutical and biotech companies , you can get job in TCS , INFOSYS , IBM , HCL ,HP , ONGC ….
While , B. SC is three year degree , more theoretical less practical knowledge , even a diploma holder will have more practical knowledge than B. SC. pass out . While pass out from NAAC accredited ‘ A ‘ university will have plus point for further studies abroad , as some universities consider NAAC accredited pass outs.
Since India , is considered as one of the third world countries , and still today 90 percent of companies in India are doing job work , that means they are manufacturing some part of product or drug for another company or principle employer , whereas the raw materials are also provided by the principal employer . Even the process of manufacturing is set by principal employer.
So basically , these companies requires technicians or diploma holders level guys in the manufacturing unit and in lab too. Their pay scale starts from 5 k to 11 k not more than that . For and B.tech pass out they will have to compete with them for jobs , thats the harsh reality . But , for B. tech pass out they can get job in the companies above mentioned and can also have campus placements . That is the only added advantage .
I personally believe if you have zeal for biotechnology you should at least have a master degree after your B.s c or B.tech . Coz , biotechnology is a vast field , a single degree doesn't suffice at all.
PS : - I am a Biotechnologist ( B.tech ) , started my career from 5k per month . Very soon I understand that single degree is not enough . I changed my field , and I am in sales in a very different industry . Now , I am having a decent job and every now and then I got a question what are you doing in this industry etc… But that's me .
Whatever you choose to do , do it wisely and stick to it .
Hope I have helped you with the answer . Best of luck.
