Benzophenone and acetophenone both are aromatic ketones.
*Benzophenone(C₆H₅COC₆H₅)
*Acetophenone(C₆H₅COCH₃)
Acetophenone and Benzophenone can be distinguish by using iodoform test. However, Benzonphenone does not contain any free methyl group so it will give a negative test.
1) C₆H₅COCH₃ + 3NaOl → C₆H₅COONa + CH₃ +2NaOH
Acetophenone + Sodium Hypoiodite → Sodium Benzate + Iodoform(yellow ppt)
2) C₆H₅COC₆H₅ + NaOl → No yellow ppt of CH₃
Benzophenol + Sodium Hypoiodite → No yellow ppt of CH₃
*Benzophenone(C₆H₅COC₆H₅)
*Acetophenone(C₆H₅COCH₃)

(ii) Acetophenone and Benzophenone can be distinguished using the iodoform test.
Iodoform test:
Methyl ketones are oxidized by sodium hypoiodite to give yellow ppt. of iodoform. Acetophenone being a methyl ketone responds to this test, but benzophenone does not.

(iii) Phenol and benzoic acid can be distinguished by ferric chloride test.
