Binomial Nomenclature and Trinomial Nomenclature:

When only genus and species name is used in writing the scientific name then it is called binomial nomenclature but, when subspecies are also mentioned then that is trinomial nomenclature.

Binomial Nomenclature:

  • In biology, all identified organisms are given a unique scientific name to them, this name is universally accepted and is unique for every organism.
  • The scientific names in which only the genus and species name is involved is called as Binomial nomenclature.
  • This method was proposed by taxonomist Carolus Linnaeus in his book Systema Naturae.
  • In binomial nomenclature, the names are like Mangifera indica for mango, Homo sapiens, for humans.
  • In this Homo reflects the genus of humans and Sapiens is the species.

Trinomial Nomenclature:

  • In Trinomial nomenclature, the scientific names also include the subspecies in it.
  • For example, the trinomial nomenclature of humans would be Homo sapiens sapiens.
  • In this, third sapiens is used to denote the subspecies of humans.
