Over time, from natural action such as weather and bacteria, the biodegradable polymer disintegrates to small pieces that are no longer unsightly visible or damaging to the environment. Exactly what the final outcome is varies on the interpretation. The earliest ones just broke into smaller pieces so you didn't see the plastic bottles lying on the road. Some considered making the polymer from natural materials like soy or cellulose so they decompose from bacteria or sunlight. One popular material was a copolymer of some cheap plastic with corn starch so moisture and sun would cause it to lose structure over a period of years. My team is reconstituting cellulose from renewable sources while friends of mine are making polymers from shrimp shell waste. Most work in green plastics and biodegradable polymers is in academic institutions around the world.
