Difference between block disintegration and exfoliation block disintegration:

Block Disintegration:

  • Where the difference between the temperature during the night time and day time is huge, rocks tend to expand and compress.
  • Due to this process, the rock expands during the day as it is hot and contracts during the night time due to the fall in temperature.
  • This makes the rock weak and as a result, the rock splits. This happens generally in desert areas.

Exfoliation:

  • The rise and fall in temperature can create cracks or fissures in rock making the rock weak.
  • When water enters the rock through cracks or through the weak spots, they tend to peel the outer layer of the rock.
  • This process is known as exfoliation.
