- Body waves are traveling through the Earth's interior. On the other side, surface waves propagate only at the ‘interface between’ two distinct media, such as the Earth-atmosphere interface (i.e. Earth's ground).
- There are two different kinds of body waves: ‘primary waves’ and ‘secondary waves’.
- Primary waves usually referred to as P-waves or pressure waves and secondary waves usually referred to as S- waves.
- They can spread in material that is solid or liquid. ‘S-waves’ are waves of shear. Only in strong material they propagate.
