Brainstorming  is a technique used to find different solutions to a problem. It helps to increase creativity.

Focus groups technique tends to go a little further. It gives an idea about the market. It also gives insight into how the market will respond to the solutions found out in brainstorming.

In brainstorming knowledge of the topic is not necessary, whereas in Focus Groups in depth knowledge of that particular topic is required.
