glycocalyx is the sticky gelatinous material that present external to the cell wall to make an additional layer.If the glycocalyx is loose called slime layer if it is tough called capsule

The bacteria having capsule called capsulated bacteria which is virulent and the bacteria having the slime layer is called non-capsulated bacteria which is avirulent

this makes difference between the capsulated and non-capsulated bacteria
