Cardenolides have a five-membered lactone group in the C17 with α, β-unsaturated γ-lactone ring (butenolide), whereas the other group, the bufadienolides, was first discovered as skin poisons in toads. The C17 substituent with a doubly unsaturated six-membered lactone ring (α-pyrone).
