The word ’caterpillar’ is applied to the larval stages of all species in the insect order Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies). “Silkworms” are the caterpillars of a particular species of moth: namely Bombyx mori. The larval forms of the other approximately 160,000 species of moth and in the 18,000 species of butterflies in the world are also caterpillars.
