A cation is a positive ion and an Anion is a negative ion.

Discuss:

  • Cation:

Cations are ions that are positively charged.

When a balanced atom loses one or more electrons a cation is formed.

For example Na(+), and Al (3+).

Here Sodium losses an electron to have a balanced valence shell with a 2, 8 configuration.

And Aluminum atom losses three electrons to have a balanced valence shell with again a 2, 8 configuration.

  • Anion:

Anions are ions that are negatively charged.

When an atom gains one or more electrons an anion is formed.

For Example Cl(-).

Here, the chlorine atom gains an electron to have a balance valence shell configuration of 2,8,8.

Thus, positive ions are cations, and negative ions are anions.
