The main difference between census and sample method is that in census method all the members of the population are enumerated while in sampling method just a few members of the population are chosen to represent the whole.

Census Method

  • All the units in the population are included in the study
  • It is time consuming to involve all the members of the population
  • It is expensive to carry out
  • Is used in both heterogenous and homogeneous populations
  • The results are quite reliable

Sampling method

  • Only a small unit of the population is used to represent the whole population
  • The sampling method is not as time consuming as the census method
  • It is cheaper to do
  • Sampling method can only be used when the population is somewhat homogenous
  • The results are not as reliable
